Speech

As of today, D has graduated from speech!

Hibiscus

This morning before school, C was doing a lovely embroidery project.  It's a hibiscus flower with petals that shade from light pink at the tips to bright pink at the center of the flower.  C wanted to take it to school and finish it up there, but I figured her teachers would appreciate it if she didn't.  C really wants to take it to school to show her art teacher, and I've told her she can do so once she finishes it.

Tortilla

I forgot to mention that when Baby T got fussy at dinner after a long wait for food, we once again offered her some tortilla.  She is getting very capable at nibbling at and ripping pieces of tortilla.

D's First Communion

Here's some of what's been happening:

  • D has started reading Harry Potter.
  • The kids took turns staying with grandma at her hotel and enjoying the hotel pool.
  • D's First Communion was this morning.
  • We had lunch at Panera's, had some complicated transportation issues, and then visited the zoo.
  • After the zoo, my husband took D to take pictures on campus, we had dinner at a Mexican place downtown, and then the kids swam at their grandma's hotel.
  • I've gotten accustomed to restaurant desserts being all basically the same, but the place we went for dinner had some interesting stuff.  We tried flan, fried ice cream in a cinnamon-and-sugar coated.  tortilla shell and a banana empanada served with raisins, pecans, ice cream and a spicy caramel sauce.
  • So tired!

Pita and tortilla

Baby T has been hitherto not super interested in the purees I've been shoveling at her.  Yesterday, however, she fed herself pita bread at a Middle Eastern place downtown and today she fed herself tortilla at a Mexican restaurant.  She seems to be just starting to take some ownership of the process.

Sight-seeing

Here's some of what's happening:

  • We are having a grandma visit for D's first communion this weekend.
  • I sort of overdid it this morning and am on track to go over 20k steps today.  Baby T, our visitor and I took the jogging stroller downtown and covered an immense amount of ground.  We did the historic bridge and visited several antique and home goods stores.  I am getting closer and closer to being able to put in an order for a custom-made dining room table made from reclaimed hardwood.  We had a latte and green tea break at the trendy coffee place downtown and then eventually had lunch at the new Middle Eastern place.  Baby T made a very creditable effort at eating pita bread at the Middle Eastern restaurant (I offered it to her after seeing how interested she was in my plate).  My pedometer says I've done over 7 miles so far today and I am so sore now.
  • We took a mid-afternoon break at home and Baby T and I had a nap.
  • Then we picked up my husband and we all went to school and ran board game club for a group of 8 kids, from grade 5 on down.  We were doing Chinese chess and some other games.
  • We all had dinner at the cafeteria and Baby T applied herself to a dinner roll.
  • The kids got to do some outdoor activities (Aerobie, atlatl, etc.) this evening.

What not to get me for Mother's Day

I was just enjoying my House Beautiful when I came upon an ad urging the reader to "Adopt-a-Manatee this Mother's Day."

UIL

C was at UIL (the University Interscholastic League) all day, competing in listening skills and number sense, as well as enjoying the playground, movies and the snack bar.  She had a headache by the end of the day, but she took a 4th place and a 2nd place for her grade.

The Honest Toddler on siblings

The Honest Toddler says, "The problem with you people is that you think children are like smartphones and upgrading every two years is normal."

Three teeth!

I finally got a look at Baby T's new teeth, and she's got three sharp little teeth in a row in her lower gums.

Baby is now 6 months old, so we can start giving her non-rice cereal solids any time we like.

Waving

Baby T is developing a responsive one-handed wave.

Teeth!

Here's some of what's happening:

  • After a number of unusually late nights, Baby T popped two (I think) itty bitty teeth on Friday.
  • C has been practicing for UIL (she'll be doing listening skills and number sense).
  • We have a new Aerobie!
  • After lunch today, we went hunting for a new park that just opened.  We eventually found it, tucked behind a suburban subdivision with almost no signage.  There isn't a playground or a restroom, but they put in a beautiful 2.5 mile paved path (C said disapprovingly, "This isn't a trail.  This is a sidewalk.").  Lots of other people were enjoying the trail with their dogs and strollers.  We didn't get very far, but we did get to use our Aerobie a bunch and use our Bumbleride jogger.  It's a 20-pound jogger, which is pretty amazing--those things are fantastic, but are usually 25 or 30 pounds.
  • One good habit we've gotten into is using our car trunk as the regular storage for the stroller frame, my husband's roller blades and the kids' scooters and helmets.  This means that we are nearly always prepared for an impromptu outing.  The trunk is beginning to feel a bit small.  As my husband was loading the jogging stroller into the car, I said, "You know what we need?" and he said, "A minivan," which is exactly what I was thinking.
  • C and I and Baby T also made a quick visit to Petco today to visit the small mammals and fish.  C is very fond of mice.  Again, IF YOU KNOW US IN REAL LIFE, DON'T BUY C A MOUSE.  I've been telling C that when she grows up and has a place of her own, she can have pets (landlord permitting).
  • The kids are really enjoying our collection of Shel Silverstein books.
  • Yesterday we did a Goodwill drop off, D, Baby T and I went to a 2nd grade birthday party (I met a country doctor who gets gifts of chicken, duck and goat) and then to Walmart, C went to her riding class, and the kids and I walked to the alternative coffee house, on the way making a hair apt. for D and checking out the new cupcake place.  My husband also took the kids to the pool.  It was a big day.
  • We are moving in less than 7 weeks!!!

Advertising fail

I just got an email from Buy Buy Baby (the 0-3 emporium) with the following header:  "Goodnight, Sleep tight.  Shop crib bedding."

You know, I was automatically mentally adding "Don't let the bedbugs bite."  Maybe this was not the best way to sell crib bedding?
